Let it be known, if it’s not already, that Hefeweizen is one of my least favourite beer styles. I like the clove spice, but dislike the estery banana character that reminds me of the horrid candy bananas from Party Mix packets. It’s the same ester that’s used in those – isoamyl acetate – which is also found in Juicy Fruit and Pear Drops. Also, this: “Isoamyl acetate is released by a honey bee’s sting apparatus where it serves as a pheromone beacon to attract other bees and provoke them to sting”. So, if you drink a lot of Hefeweizen, expect to be stung by bees. Fact.
I’m going to spend less time on the tasting notes for this than the above rant. Cloves, bread, banana esters. Not as intense as some Hefes. Watery, refreshing, easy drinking. Cloves carry on with the finish. True to style. Good Hefe. Not for me, unless it was a really hot day, then I could smash this.
